Area communities prepare for legal fireworks

This year’s Independence Day could be more explosive than most.

Earlier this year, the state legislature passed a law that makes firework sales legal in Iowa for the first time in nearly eight decades. However, strict rules and regulations still apply. While firework sales are legal, they are not legal all the time. Instead, the state has designated specific windows for legal sale, the first of which began on Thursday, June 1.

Two windows of sale were designated in the legislation, effectively allowing the sale of fireworks around the two holidays where firework use is most prevalent, Independence Day and New Year’s Day.
