Area qualifies 31 in 1A field

NORTHWOOD – Last year, CAL’s Kainan Braun became the first boys state qualifier from the school in a few years, this year he gets to celebrate with a teammate.

Israel Rivera will also be his competition in the 400-meter dash in the Class 1A field when the meet starts on Thursday, May 18.

When asked his thoughts Friday after it was confirmed he qualified – he had to wait since he finished third in the event – only the winner automatically qualifies and the next 12 times advance, he said he ‘is happy now.’


Meanwhile, West Fork senior Jake Hansen will be competing in his fourth state meet seeking his first title while running in all three distance events.

He won the 800 and was runner-up to Riley Bauer of North Union in both the 1,600 and 3,200, but his times in the former two events were among the top-10 in the 1A field, including fourth in the 1,600.

The Warhawks top seed of all qualifiers is Austin Larson in the 110 hurdles...
