Cerro Gordo County firefighters receive grain bin rescue equipment

Area fire departments came together on Thursday, July 17, for a special training session in Rockwell.

Representatives from the fire departments of Rockwell, Thornton, Dougherty, Meservey, Mason City, Plymouth, Swaledale and Ventura all gathered in Rockwell to receive their newly-donated grain bin rescue equipment. After a dinner for the firefighters hosted by Cerro Gordo County Farm Bureau, the crews split into groups to receive training for the new equipment by simulating grain bin rescues across the street at Five Star Co-Op.

The effort began two years ago when the Cerro Gordo County Farm Bureau board decided that providing grain bin rescue equipment for the county's fire departments would be a worthy cause. Paid for with donations from 14 businesses, including First Security Bank, Five Star Co-op, North Iowa Co-op and Sukup Manufacturing, the Cerro Gordo County Farm Bureau handed out $25,000 worth of rescue equipment to the fire fighters.
