Cooking for campers • Youth for Christ hosts grill out to raise money for summer camp

Food served hot off the grill outside of Youth for Christ in Hampton will help send area students to summer camp.

Darwin Van Horn, director of the Hampton location, said that the organization last Wednesday hosted a cookout to help raise money to send students to National Youth for Christ middle school camp at Sunstream Christian Retreat in August at the end of July. He said Youth for Christ served more than 100 diners Wednesday and was able to collect more than $1,000. At approximately $360 per camper and plans to send 33 to the camp, Van Horn said he was greatly appreciative of those that swung by and grabbed a bite to eat.

“This was a good fundraiser for us,” he said.

The cookout helped supplement other fundraising efforts and donations conducted by Youth for Christ throughout the year, which includes the annual Comedy Café.

Van Horn said the camp is a valuable experience to the middle schoolers that attend because it gives them a chance to participate in a variety of activities and meet other children from different walks of life throughout the week. Students at this particular camp come from Iowa, the Omaha area and Minnesota. This year’s camp is July 27 through July 31.
