Fair foundation eyes major grant • Would mostly complete fundraising goal for convention center renovations

A state grant could provide the final push needed to complete renovations to the Franklin County Convention Center.

The Franklin County Fair Foundation last week announced it is pursuing an Enhance Iowa Grant, which could fund up to 20 percent of the $1.2 million project.

The foundation last year unveiled plans for the renovation, which includes a complete facelift on the interior and adjustments that would accommodate three sizes of groups. Carport dropoff, parking and entrance restrooms would also receive improvements.

Carol Lowrey, fundraising committee co-chair, said the group has been able to raise $546,478 – or 45 percent - of the $1.2 million goal through pledges and donations.

“We’ve gotten great support from the community so far and it shows that this is a need,” she said.
