Franklin County Supervisors shoot down hog confinement expansion request

Sunner Finisher Farm, contracted by Iowa Select of Iowa Falls, was denied an application to construct an additional hog confinement site at their existing location near Latimer and Coulter in the Marion Township.

The Board of Supervisors (BOS) made this unanimous rejection Wednesday, May 30.

Four community objections were received by the BOS. Supervisor Gary McVicker stated the denial stemmed from not meeting the minimum required separation distance of 1,875 feet as defined by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

According to the DNR, the larger the confinement operation, the more requirements must be met for approval.

The DNR may overrule the Board’s decision, in which case the supervisors have 15 days to appeal.
