Hampton Post Office, area evacuated for suspicious item in post office lobby

A suspicious item in the Hampton Post Office led to a two-hour evacuation of the area on Monday, May 7.

At 1:17 p.m. Franklin County Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call reporting the item in the post office lobby. Law enforcement did not disclose specifics as to what the item was.

Responders evacuated the post office, as well as residents and businesses in a one-block area surrounding the post office grounds, including the Franklin County Courthouse.

Traffic on Highway 3 was rerouted from Second Street NW through Highway 65. Citizens outside were asked to stay at least two blocks away from the post office during the investigation.
