Maynes Grove hosts back-to-back winter events

There was plenty of action at Maynes Grove Park this weekend as the county park was host to two snowy Saturday events.

Early in the morning, outdoor enthusiasts from around the area congregated at the park for its first Fat Tire Bike Race.

Part of the Iowa Falls Winter Rec Fest, the race saw nine dedicated cyclists take on the newly prepared bike course for three laps in the snow using specially fitted bicycles made for winter riding.

“It’s a completely different feel,” said Alison Campbell, who organized the event. “Downhills and uphills are always a struggle to get enough traction in the snow, but it’s so fun. I love the crunch of snow under the tires.”

Bicycling may not immediately come to mind when thinking of winter activities, but these cyclists don’t let single-digit temperatures or snowy trails keep them from enjoying their hobby. Using specialty bikes with wide tires for better traction, the area riding community is happy to go out and support each other on the trails.
