Don’t tell the Franklin County 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl Senior team that not growing up on a livestock production is a disadvantage.

The team, consisting of Jaiden Shahan, of Ackley, Jenna Shahan, of Ackley, Jacob Fjeld, of Iowa Falls, Mikayla Fjeld, of Iowa Falls and Elizabeth Thiesen, Alden, claimed the State 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl title at the state competition last Saturday, April 13.

The team will represent Iowa at the National 4-H Quiz Bowl Competition this fall in Grand Island, Nebraska.

Jacob Fjeld, a junior at Iowa Falls-Alden, said that the team has been working hard for nearly seven years to reach the national competition. With a slate of questions geared towards livestock production and a team that didn’t grow up with livestock, Jacob said the group worked incredibly hard to master the material.

“At first there was a disadvantage when we were in fourth and fifth grades competing against high school teams that grew up around livestock,” he said. “There’s an interest and drive that pushed us to become more knowledgeable and involved even though we didn’t have that background.”
