Rotary Club donates 155 dictionaries to third graders

Earlier this month, the Hampton Rotary Club distributed 155 dictionaries to Franklin County third graders.

John Terwin, co-president of the Rotary Club, said the annual event is greatly anticipated by both Rotary and the students.

“For one, kids love to get the books,” he said. “At times, you start to wonder if they still appreciate a dictionary, but their eyes still light up when we walk in.” “A Student’s Dictionary,” Terwin said, is more than just words and definitions. The books contain grammar and pronunciation guides, a list of United States presidents, a map of the United States and more educational materials.

The Rotary distribution is in conjunction with The Dictionary Project, an effort started in 1992 to ensure students have their own dictionary. What started as a donation of 50 dictionaries from Annie Plummer to children close to her Savannah, Georgia home, has grown to distributions in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, areas in Canada and more than 15 countries throughout the world.
