Sheffield finds their second officer, but now needs a new chief

The Sheffield City Council’s ongoing efforts to fill their law enforcement needs continued during their regular meeting on Monday, February 11.

The city has been working to hire a new secondary police officer since last October but while a candidate has been selected for that position, a new opening has been made. Monday was the last official day for Police Chief Sam Cain, who has taken a job with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.

Cain’s departure has complicated matters for the city. At the previous meeting, the council agreed to hire Cody Brunstein, who presently works security for Winnebago and is a reserve officer in Forest City, upon completion of a required training test.

The council initially intended to officially offer Brunstein the position at the Monday meeting, however some city officials were reluctant to have an officer working without the presence of a qualified supervisor, resulting in a debate over whether the city should move ahead with the hiring or wait.
