Super Hero Science Soars Into Swaledale

The science of super heroes was on display in Swaledale on Wednesday as the "Imagmobile" from Grout Museum visited the library to put on a demonstration of physics, chemistry, and biology.

"The goal for this is to introduce kids to science in an interesting way," said Emma Seehusen, outreach assistant for the Grout Museum, who spends her summer performing demonstrations in small communities across Iowa.

Each demonstration is themed after a popular super hero character, with Superman representing the physics of flight, a Tesla coil to represent the mutant Storm, fast burning powder to simulate the powers of The Human Torch, a stretchy chemical compound for Mr. Fantastic, and, representing the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man was Wilber the Tarantula.

"Super heroes are something a lot of kids are into," said Seehusen. "Being able to show the science behind them is really neat."
