Swaledale Council Takes Issue With County Supervisor Statements

The Swaledale City Council is standing behind Mayor John Drury as a request for financial assistance to demolish nuisance properties led to a contentious exchange in the pages of the Globe Gazette.

     On April 20, Drury sent a letter to the Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors requesting a meeting to have an in-depth discussion about the need for a city-county partnership to assist with cleaning up abandoned properties.

     Abandoned properties are an issue in many small towns. When a home is left vacant to the point where it becomes a nuisance, it becomes the city's responsibility to pay for the demolition, often with little hope of recouping the cost from the next owner.
