Train derails in Rockwell

Thirty-two rail cars derailed from a southbound Union Pacific train in rural Rockwell on May 18.

The cars tumbled from the tracks at around 1:30 p.m., three quarters of a mile west of Highway 65, just south of Mason City. The train was stopped to evaluate the situation, blocking the crossings at 180th and 190th Street. Rockwell Fire and Rescue and the Cerro Gordo Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

No one was injured in the incident, according to Rockwell Fire Chief Mark Lowe, who was on scene.

The train was traveling from south St. Paul, Minnesota to North Platte, Nebraska, said Union Pacific Corporate Communications Director Calli Hite via email. It consisted of 146 rail cars carrying mixed freight, including sand.
