West Fork Dance Team wins two state titles

The West Fork High School Dance Team successfully defended two state titles by winning its divisions Thursday in competition at Des Moines.

The West Fork squad, coached by Emily Trewin, claimed top honors in the Class IV Pom division (which included 10 teams) and also earned the crown in the Class II Hip Hop division (which was made up of 11 teams).

Twenty-four college teams and 254 high school teams made up the 600 routines performed at the 44th Annual Iowa Dance Team Championships Thursday and Friday. West Fork’s Dance Team of 17 girls was part of the nearly 5000 students that competed.

Routines were performed and judged in several categories: pom, jazz, novelty, lights, military, hip hop, lyrical, hoopla, kick, show production, color guard, all-male and coed. The teams are judged by an expert group of judges from across the United States. The judges scores are based on appearance, choreography, execution, technique and general effect/showmanship.

Teams were awarded Division I, II or III ratings along with trophy placements for those teams with the highest point totals.
