Aguirre praises Mexico’s effort after World Cup exit to England
On 6 July 2026 at Estadio Ciudad de México, England ended Mexico’s World Cup run with a 3-2 victory and a place in the quarterfinals. Javier Aguirre defended Mexico’s performance, saying his players “hicieron lo que pudieron ante un gran equipo,” and argued that the defeat turned on a pair of mistakes rather than a lack of fight.
Mexico’s exit came after a tournament start that had raised expectations sharply. The team finished first in its group with wins over South Africa, 2-0, South Korea, 1-0, and the Czech Republic, 3-0, before meeting England in the round of 16.

Aguirre said the margin at this level is unforgiving, adding that “no te puedes equivocar porque te condena,” a blunt assessment of the defensive lapses that decided the night.

He also avoided turning the defeat into a public reckoning with individual players. In the hours after the match, Aguirre made clear that he had no personal reproaches for the squad, saying the classification was lost on two specific errors, not on a collapse of commitment.
