Argentina faces Egypt in World Cup round of 16 in Atlanta
Argentina arrived at Estadio de Atlanta with serious faces and firm steps, the kind of body language that fit a champion carrying expectation into a Round of 16 match it was supposed to win. The defending world champion was scheduled to meet Egypt on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with kickoff set for 12:00 in Atlanta, 13:00 in Buenos Aires and 19:00 in Cairo.
That pressure shaped everything around Lionel Scaloni’s group. Argentina had finished first in Group K with three straight victories, but its path had not been smooth. In the previous round, it needed extra time to beat Cabo Verde 3-2, and the decisive moment came in the 111th minute on an own goal. For a team trying to defend a crown, that kind of survival can sharpen a squad or expose the strain beneath it.
Egypt entered with a different burden and a different kind of freedom. The North Africans reached the Round of 16 for the first time in a World Cup, and they did it by beating Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw through regulation and extra time. The lineup picture pointed to a team built around Mostafa Shoubir in goal and Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush up front, but ESPN reported that Ahmed Fatouh and Mohamed Abdelmoneim were unavailable because of injury.
Argentina’s edge came from familiarity at this level. The team had reached the Round of 16 in every World Cup since 2002, a run that underlined how routine this stage has become for a side FIFA described as one of South America’s most decorated. FIFA also projected a starting group that included Emiliano Martínez; Nahuel Molina, Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martínez and Nicolás Tagliafico; Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernández and Thiago Almada; Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martínez. ESPN noted minor fitness doubts for Nicolás González and Facundo Medina.
The history between the teams was thin but telling. Argentina and Egypt had met only once before in an official international match, a 2008 friendly won 2-0 by Argentina with goals from Sergio Agüero and Nicolás Burdisso. The winner in Atlanta would move on to meet Switzerland or Colombia in Kansas City on July 11.
Atlanta’s role in the tournament matched the scale of the occasion. FIFA said the city would host eight World Cup matches, including a semifinal, while expanded fan zones, improved MARTA access and sustainability initiatives were built around the stadium district. In a city set to absorb the tournament’s traffic and attention, Argentina’s calm walk into the arena said as much about the weight of defending a title as any pregame speech could have.
