Bellingham header puts England ahead of Mexico in last 16 clash
Jude Bellingham rose at the back post to head England ahead of Mexico in the 36th minute at Mexico City Stadium, a finish from Bukayo Saka’s cross that opened the floodgates in a Round of 16 match that swung sharply before half-time. England struck again two minutes later to make it 2-0, only for Julián Quiñones to pull Mexico back in the 42nd minute and keep the contest alive.
The goal underlined the speed and precision of England’s attack, with Bellingham and captain Harry Kane central to the movement that repeatedly pulled Mexico out of shape. Jordan Pickford preserved England’s cushion with an important save to deny Raúl Jiménez before Quiñones’ reply, a sequence that exposed how quickly Mexico were punished when space opened at the back post and around the edge of the area.

England had reached the knockout stage after a group campaign built on a win over Panama, a 0-0 draw with Ghana and a victory over Congo DR in the Round of 32. Thomas Tuchel’s side arrived in Mexico City with a squad built around Bellingham in midfield and Kane up front, carrying the expectation that England could turn control into goals in the decisive rounds.
Mexico came into the match with a perfect nine points from the group stage after beating South Africa, Czechia and Korea Republic, then adding a Round of 32 win over Ecuador. A place in the quarter-finals would have sent Mexico there for the first time since 1986, giving the home side added urgency as the tie tightened after England’s quick double.

FIFA framed England’s return to Mexico City as a meeting with history, the same venue where England fell to Argentina in the 1986 quarter-finals and where Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” and later “Goal of the Century” still define the backdrop. England’s own World Cup record remains a small but specific part of that setting: one title in 1966, semi-final runs in 1990 and 2018, and five quarter-final appearances overall. Bellingham’s header gave that record another high-pressure chapter.
