CM Punk shocks Chicago, wins Undisputed WWE Championship on Raw

By Mike Shaw ·

CM Punk returned to Chicago’s Allstate Arena on July 6 and left with the Undisputed WWE Championship, a finish that transformed a reshuffled main event into one of WWE’s most valuable kinds of television: a surprise that pays off immediately.

WWE had originally built the Raw main event around Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn, with Rhodes among the featured names on the July 6 preview. Gunther’s earlier assault on Rhodes forced the change, opening the door for Punk to step in against Zayn and giving the company a late pivot that kept the match fresh while preserving the championship stakes.

That change mattered beyond the result itself. A show promoted from Chicago with three titles on the line was already framed as a SummerSlam build episode, and Punk’s return gave Raw a hook that stretched well past the arena. The ending delivered the kind of moment WWE uses to drive social conversation, replay value and next-week curiosity: Punk avoided a Helluva Kick, then hit the Go-To-Sleep to pin Zayn and capture the title.

The win also fit the economics of WWE’s nostalgia business. Punk’s Chicago connection made the return feel like more than a routine booking twist, especially on a brand where his name still carries history. WWE’s archive shows Punk on Raw as far back as July 2, 2012, when he appeared in a tag match alongside John Cena, underscoring how the company can repurpose long-running brand memory into a current main-event payoff.

Raw’s July 6 card was not built on Punk alone. WWE’s recap also noted a World Tag Team Championship change and a successful Women’s Intercontinental Championship defense by Sol Ruca, while the broader night fed into SummerSlam season and a Raw slate that had already advertised Seth Rollins and other top names. That layering of title movement and surprise appearances is part of the formula: load the show with stakes, then use a return like Punk’s to convert the audience’s attention into a reset for the top championship scene.

For WWE, the result was bigger than a Chicago reaction shot. It refreshed the title picture, gave Raw an instant talking point and turned a one-night surprise into a new starting point for the road to SummerSlam.
