Swaledale councilman dies in car accident

The town of Swaledale is reeling this week following the untimely passing of Troy Smeby.

Smeby, 42, was a member of the Swaledale City Council and a deacon at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme.

According to the Iowa State Patrol report, at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 9, Smeby was driving northbound on Jonquil Ave. when, for an undetermined reason, his vehicle swerved into the ditch and rolled several times.

“The City of Swaledale mourns the loss of Councilman Troy Smeby. He served his community well,” wrote the city via their Facebook page.

Funeral services for Smeby will be held today, Thursday, December 14, at 1:30 p.m. at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme. His family has suggested memorial contributions to the Swaledale Public Library, Hospice of North Iowa, or the Humane Society of North Iowa.
