Disney marks America’s 250th birthday with 24-hour broadcast

Disney Entertainment Television wrapped America’s 250th anniversary into a 24-hour multiplatform broadcast that began at 10 p.m. EDT on July 3 and ran through July 4 across ABC, Disney+, ESPN, Hulu, National Geographic, Freeform, FX and ABC News Live. David Muir led coverage across all 50 states as Disney turned the holiday into a company-wide programming push.

The campaign sat under Disney Celebrates America, a broad effort Disney said had been in planning for more than a year. Seni Tienabaso, vice president of ABC News Live, said the first planning meeting took place in April 2025, showing how far in advance the company moved to build a national anniversary event around its own media and theme-park footprint. Disney said the programming was meant to highlight the nation’s history, people, progress, future, landscapes, cultures and communities, a sweeping list that framed the anniversary as both patriotic tribute and brand storytelling.

The broadcast opened with Brandi Carlile performing America the Beautiful with SistaStrings, giving the first moments of the 24-hour coverage a familiar patriotic cue before the rest of the networked rollout. ABC News’ Sophie Flay highlighted moments from the coverage as Disney used the anniversary to put live reporting, entertainment and national symbolism into the same production pipeline.

The effort extended beyond the broadcast with a two-hour primetime special, Disney Celebrates America: The Pursuit of Happiness, along with other themed programming and park activations. The Walt Disney Company also announced a $2.5 million donation to Blue Star Families and said the celebration included reimagined Soarin’ attractions. Together, the broadcast, special, donation and park tie-ins showed how a media giant packaged a civic milestone into a coordinated promotional event, folding national identity, nostalgia and philanthropy into one July 4 campaign.
