Egypt stun Argentina 2-0 in World Cup round of 16

Mostafa Ziko finished a sweeping counterattack in the 67th minute to put Egypt 2-0 up on defending champion Argentina in the World Cup round of 16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The move began with Mohamed Salah and ended with a Haissem Hassan assist, a sequence that turned Egypt’s compact defending into a break that cut straight through the Albiceleste.

Egypt had already struck first through Yasser Ibrahim in the opening half, forcing Argentina to chase a match that had been expected to follow a different script. The defending champions entered the knockout stage with a record of reaching the round of 16 at every World Cup since 2002, while Egypt had arrived there for the first time after beating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

The second goal was not Egypt’s first threat. Ziko had put the ball in the net in the 58th minute, only for VAR to rule it out for a foul by Hassan on Lisandro Martínez. Egypt did not let the setback alter its approach. Nine minutes later, Salah again helped launch the break, Hassan delivered the final pass, and Ziko finished the move to make it 2-0.

That scoreline left Argentina under severe pressure in a match that had already exposed the space behind its lines and the danger of overcommitting against a fast counter. Egypt’s first goal had shown it could punish a lapse in structure, and the disallowed effort before the second goal underscored how persistent its transitions had become.

Argentina later reacted and cut the deficit in the final stretch, but by then Egypt had already forced the reigning champions into a scramble they had not expected. In a tournament where reputation rarely survives a single bad turnover, Egypt’s two goals in Atlanta showed how fragile a favorite can look when a counterattack is executed with precision.
