George Clooney to receive Venice Film Festival lifetime achievement honor

George Clooney will receive Venice’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, putting one of Hollywood’s best-known names at the center of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival before the full lineup is announced. The honor arrives as the festival prepares to open on the Lido di Venezia and signals that Venice intends to lead with star power as much as with titles.

La Biennale di Venezia said the award was granted by its board of directors on the recommendation of artistic director Alberto Barbera. The festival runs from September 2 to 12, 2026, with the opening ceremony set for September 2 and the awards ceremony and closing on September 12. The lineup announcement is scheduled for the last week of July, giving Clooney’s recognition an early place in the festival’s rollout.

The official announcement identified Clooney as an American actor, director and producer and pointed to Jay Kelly, Syriana and Good Night and Good Luck as examples of the range that has kept him visible across decades. Barbera called him a “complete and charismatic artist,” placing Clooney in the company of performers whose appeal has extended beyond box-office recognition into directing and prestige filmmaking.

Clooney, 65, said Venice is his favorite festival and called the honor a “tremendous honor.” His link to the event goes back to 1998, when he first appeared at Venice with Out of Sight, the start of a long relationship with a festival that has repeatedly used lifetime awards to frame a career’s lasting influence. Werner Herzog received the same Golden Lion honor in 2025.

The award also fits Venice’s broader pattern of using its top prizes to shape the conversation around the festival before the competition slate is fully in view. In a crowded entertainment market where celebrity is often measured by streaming visibility and social media reach, Venice is still betting that legacy travels best through institutions that can define it with a single, durable honor.
