Hossam Hassan urges calm as Egypt reaches World Cup last 16

By Andrea Vigano ·

Hossam Hassan kept his reaction measured as Yasser Ibrahim’s header set off a full-bench celebration, a contrast that captured the pressure around Egypt’s surge into the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time. The 33-year-old Ibrahim, a defender for Al Ahly, was one of the 26 players Hassan named in Egypt’s squad on 20 May 2026, alongside Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush and Mohamed El Shenawy, with Mostafa Mohamed left out.

Hassan, who took charge of Egypt in February 2024, had asked for calm long before the knockout stage arrived. FIFA said his target was to advance to the next round and deliver Egypt’s first World Cup win, a demanding brief for a side that entered the tournament carrying seven Africa Cup of Nations titles but no previous World Cup victories. In that setting, a header from Ibrahim mattered for more than the scoreboard: it gave Egypt a goal from a defender, steadied a team built around Salah and Marmoush, and reinforced the value of set-piece moments in a tournament where margins are thin.

The composure on the touchline contrasted with the reaction behind it. Ibrahim ran to the bench and the celebration spread through the squad, a visible release for a team that had already written a piece of history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time. FIFA reported that Egypt sealed that place after a dramatic 1-1 draw with Iran, then beat Australia 4-2 on penalties on 3 July 2026 to reach the last 16. Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the decisive kick in the shootout, while Mohamed Salah converted a Panenka, underlining the confidence Hassan had tried to build inside a squad that also included Trezeguet and Mohamed Abdelmonem.

Egypt’s next assignment was scheduled for 7 July in Atlanta, against the winner of Argentina v Cabo Verde. For Hassan, the measured celebration fit a campaign built on control, even as the emotions around Egypt’s breakthrough made clear how much the first World Cup wins and the first knockout qualification still meant to the country.
