Hundreds attend Penelope Keith funeral at Guildford Cathedral

Hundreds of mourners gathered at Guildford Cathedral for Dame Penelope Keith’s funeral, turning the service into a public tribute to one of British television’s most recognisable comic performers. The scale of the turnout underlined the affection attached to an actress whose screen characters became part of the national memory.

Broadcaster Gyles Brandreth said the service was “deeply moving” as he made his way to the cathedral in Guildford, Surrey. Brandreth described Keith as “a wonderful actress and a lovely person, funny and wise and kind,” a tribute that reflected the blend of wit and warmth that colleagues and viewers associated with her throughout her career.

The BBC said tributes were paid to the “comic genius” Penelope Keith after her death aged 86. It identified her best-known television roles as Margo Leadbetter in The Good Life and Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in To the Manor Born, two parts that helped define an era of British sitcom writing and performance. Those roles made Keith a familiar presence in homes across the country, with her precision, timing and clipped delivery becoming central to both characters’ appeal.

Among the mourners were actors Robert Lindsay and Neil Pearson, names that added to the sense that the service brought together fellow performers from the world Keith helped shape. Their attendance, alongside hundreds of others, gave the funeral the atmosphere of a wider profession paying respects to a performer whose craft had outlasted the programmes that first made her famous.
