Lorenzo urges Colombia to keep belief ahead of Switzerland clash
Néstor Lorenzo tried to keep Colombia’s illusion under control as the national side headed into a World Cup knockout match with Switzerland at BC Place in Vancouver, where the last available quarterfinal berth was on the line. The Colombia coach said the focus had to stay on discipline and belief, while warning that Switzerland would be a very difficult opponent.
Colombia reached the round of 16 by beating Ghana 1-0 on July 3, with Jhon Arias scoring in the 14th minute after an assist from Luis Suárez. That result extended Colombia’s unbeaten run to four matches at the 2026 World Cup and kept the team moving through a tournament in which Lorenzo has tried to manage expectation as much as tactics.

He also pushed back against exitismo, the rush to turn a strong run into certainty, and insisted the attention should remain on Switzerland alone. The Swiss arrived unbeaten as well, with a balanced side that Lorenzo described as strong in both attack and defense. The winner in Vancouver will move on to the quarterfinals and meet either Argentina or Egypt.
Colombia’s buildup was complicated by the loss of Jhon Córdoba, who suffered a tear and was ruled out for the rest of the tournament. The injury removed a forward option at exactly the moment when Colombia needed depth for a match that could define its place in the competition.

There was also a larger historical edge to the meeting. Colombia was trying to match or surpass its best World Cup finish, while Switzerland was chasing its first quarterfinal appearance since 1954, when it reached that stage on home soil. Two unbeaten teams entered Vancouver with the same prize in view, and only one would leave with a place among the final eight.
