Luis Romo seals Mexico’s World Cup win over South Korea
Luis Romo did more than finish a chance in Guadalajara. His 50th-minute goal gave Mexico a 1-0 win over South Korea at Estadio Guadalajara, also known as Estadio Akron, and pushed the team to six points in Group A with one round still to go.
The result, sealed before 45,522 fans, made Mexico the first side to clinch a place in the World Cup’s round of 16. It also sharpened the case for a national team trying to look less like a collection of attacking moments and more like a group built on control, patience and discipline.
Romo, born June 5, 1995, in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, arrived at the match under added scrutiny after comments before kickoff were interpreted as suggesting Mexico did not need to feel pressure to beat South Korea. His decisive finish turned that debate into a result, and his celebration carried an emotional meaning he later explained after the match.
The goal fit the tone Javier Aguirre has been pushing since the tournament began. After the final whistle, the coach pointed to the squad’s maturity, its emotional control and the way the group has learned together through the first two games. Mexico’s start has been efficient rather than flashy, but it has been enough to secure the top of the group with a perfect six points.
Romo framed that approach in simpler terms. “Nosotros soñamos en grande siempre,” he said, a line that captured the balance this Mexico side is trying to strike between ambition and restraint. The message was not about playing small. It was about moving one controlled step at a time.
That mentality now defines Mexico’s position in the tournament. The team has already locked up first place in Group A, booked its place in the round of 16 and preserved its momentum for the knockout phase. For a side often judged by flair and expectation, Romo’s winner suggested a different strength may matter more: discipline under pressure, the kind that can travel farther than talent alone.
