Mariska Hargitay to host 78th Emmy Awards on NBC
Mariska Hargitay will host the 78th Emmy Awards, a booking that puts one of NBC’s most recognizable dramatic stars at the center of television’s biggest night. The ceremony is set for Monday, September 14, 2026, and will air live on NBC and Peacock from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
NBC announced the choice on July 7, making the “Law & Order: SVU” star a sharp break from the comedians and sitcom performers who have often been tapped to keep the Emmys loose. Hargitay will be the first woman to host the awards in 15 years, since Jane Lynch in 2011, and only the fourth woman to helm the telecast this century. The network is also returning the show to NBC in NBC’s 100th birthday year, a detail Hargitay highlighted in her statement: “Bringing important stories into the light has been the heartbeat of my career,” she said, adding that it is her honor to host the ceremony in the centennial year.
NBC executive vice president of live events and specials Jen Neal framed the choice as one rooted in stature rather than novelty. Neal said Hargitay has “earned her place among television’s icons,” calling her a fitting choice as NBC marks its centennial. The production will be handled by Jesse Collins Entertainment, with Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay serving as executive producers.

The Emmy calendar is already moving. The Television Academy lists nominations for July 8, 2026, with final-round voting running through August 17, 2026. That timeline sets up a compressed run to the September broadcast, when the industry will be watching not just the winners but the tone of the show itself.
Hargitay’s selection also reflects a broader calculation about what awards shows can still be in a fractured entertainment market. NBC is not betting on a comic host to chase easy laughs alone. It is leaning on a familiar prestige figure with an established audience, a live-event anchor, and a long-running network identity that stretches beyond one role. That approach comes after the 77th Emmy Awards, hosted by Nate Bargatze on CBS, drew more than 7.42 million viewers, the largest audience for the Emmys since 2021.
