Prosecutors unveil new video in Charlie Kirk shooting hearing

Prosecutors played unedited Utah Valley University security video in Provo as they tried to show a judge there is enough evidence to send Tyler Robinson to trial in Charlie Kirk’s killing. The five-day preliminary hearing in Utah’s 4th District Court began Monday, July 6, 2026, and prosecutors are also seeking the death penalty if Robinson is convicted.

The hearing drew Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk’s widow, and other family members, along with Donald Trump Jr., who attended in person and saw Robinson face the family for the first time in court. Ahead of the hearing, the family called the proceeding a painful reminder of Kirk’s death and thanked supporters for their prayers and kindness.

Kirk was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025, and was declared dead a few hours later at Timpanogos Regional Hospital. The video, played after Judge Tony Graf previously objected to edited clips with zooms and markings, showed a man prosecutors identified as Robinson parking a Dodge Challenger, moving around campus, eating at the Sorenson Center Chick-fil-A, leaving briefly toward a wooded area, then returning without a backpack and heading to the Losee Center roof.

The shooter jumped off that rooftop after firing the fatal shot and left a gun and ammunition in a wooded area near the university. Trace evidence collected from the rooftop included shoe impressions, a forearm imprint, and a palm print. The bureau created a Virtual Family Assistance Center for people affected by the shooting and received tips during the investigation.

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray charged Robinson with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child. The hearing was expected to include a recorded statement from Robinson’s roommate, Lance Twiggs, along with additional witness testimony before Judge Tony Graf decides whether the case goes forward to trial.
