President Donald Trump met separately with Benjamin Netanyahu and Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington on Tuesday, turning a day of memorial politics into a test of U.S. leverage as the Iran war escalated and Ukraine’s fight against Russia entered another critical stage. The separate meetings came before Trump delivered Sen. Lindsey Graham’s eulogy, and they put Israel’s and Ukraine’s needs in the same room without putting their leaders there together.

For Netanyahu, the meeting was the first with Trump since the Iran war began. Netanyahu had already made clear that Iran was the top item on the agenda, and the visit carried an additional political edge: he was looking for Trump’s help ahead of Israel’s October election. That made the White House talks about more than wartime coordination. They also measured how much Trump was willing to give Israel publicly, and how much he wanted to keep his own hand free as the conflict widened.

Zelenskyy’s session carried a different immediate ask. He pressed for a Patriot-related defense arrangement, including discussion of Patriot missile production or a Patriot deal that could strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses against Russian attacks. That request underscored a direct military need, not a symbolic visit, and it highlighted how Zelenskyy’s pitch to Trump rested on concrete battlefield hardware rather than broad assurances.

The parallel meetings showed both alignment and strain. Trump was hosting two leaders tied to two separate wars, both of them in Washington for Graham’s memorial service, and both were arriving with urgent demands. Netanyahu wanted Trump’s backing as Israel faced the Iran conflict and an approaching election. Zelenskyy wanted air-defense support as Russia kept up pressure on Ukraine. The public messaging from each side pointed to immediate interests, not a shared diplomatic reset.

What remained unclear from the separate talks was how far Trump was prepared to push either leader, especially Netanyahu, on steps that could lower the risk of direct U.S. entanglement. The fact that Trump did not stage a joint encounter suggested he was keeping the conflicts distinct even as he tried to exert influence over both.
