Trump overruled Mall celebration cancellation amid storm evacuation

Severe storms forced an evacuation of the National Mall on July 4, but Donald Trump overruled the plan to cancel the evening celebration and kept the 250th-anniversary program alive. Event staff shut down security checkpoints and told attendees to seek shelter as rain and lightning moved over Washington, D.C. Crowds packed nearby museums, subway stations and federal buildings while the Mall cleared under emergency direction.

The Mall reopened and the evening fireworks and remarks continued. Trump had already said on social media that he would not let rain stop the 250th celebration, and he eventually took the stage around 11:15 p.m. ET, long after the program had been delayed by the storm.

The 2026 event was branded Freedom 250 and Salute to America, marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. Officials expected hundreds of thousands of visitors, and Freedom 250 called the fireworks display the largest in history. The July 4 program on the Mall included the Great American State Fair, Salute to America and fireworks.

Heat had already complicated the planning before the thunderstorms hit. Earlier in the July 4 weekend, Freedom 250 delayed Mall entry because of extreme temperatures, and organizers added cooling resources, water stations and medical support across the grounds. Freedom 250 coordinated with Park Police, the National Park Service, the Secret Service and FEMA as it tried to keep the event moving through dangerous weather.
