Trump’s DOGE sunset arrives with no final White House report

The White House and the Office of Management and Budget let Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency expire on July 4 without a final wrap-up report.

DOGE began with Executive Order 14158, signed on January 20, 2025 and later published in the Federal Register. The order framed the effort as a bid to modernize federal technology and software. A February 11 White House order launched a workforce optimization drive, and a February 26 order required agencies to build centralized systems to record and justify payments for covered contracts and grants.

Trump said DOGE would deliver fiscal discipline and promised a vast savings haul. DOGE’s savings claims reached $215 billion, below the $2 trillion figure he touted and compared with a roughly $7 trillion federal budget. Elon Musk, whose Silicon Valley team helped drive the initiative, had already cut his own target from $2 trillion to $1 trillion to $150 billion before announcing his departure from government on May 29, 2025.

In February 2025, DOGE’s public “wall of receipts” contained duplicate, inflated or otherwise incorrect contract claims. A later House Oversight Democratic report found DOGE claimed more than 13,440 terminated contracts, 264 leases and 15,887 grants, and called the savings estimates wildly inaccurate and inconsistent.

The effort pushed thousands of federal employees out of their jobs, and hundreds of General Services Administration employees were later asked to return in September 2025 after earlier purges. A May 2026 ruling by federal judge Colleen McMahon held that DOGE had no authority to cancel more than $100 million in humanities grants.

In February 2026, House Oversight Democrats said the Trump administration had funneled about $81 million to fund DOGE employees, resources and activities with little transparency.
