Walmart cuts prices on thousands of summer items, Trump claims credit

Walmart lowered prices on thousands of items across grocery, household essentials, outdoor living, toys and apparel on July 6, even as Donald Trump said the discounting happened at his administration’s request. The rollbacks were meant to help customers and Sam’s Club members make the most of the summer season, not to mark a political victory lap.

Walmart listed 73% ground beef at $5.94 a pound, down from $6.74; sweet corn at 25 cents each, down from 68 cents; fresh red cherries in a 2.25-pound bag at $5.63, down from $11.18; Great Value ice cream at $2.50, down from $2.97; Lay’s Classic potato chips at $2.50, down from $2.97; and 24-packs of Coca-Cola products at $9.97, down from $14.97. Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Dr Pepper and Diet Mountain Dew 24-packs were also marked down to $9.97 from $13.97.

Sam’s Club lowered prices on more than 250 items, including road-trip snacks, grilling essentials and summer entertaining favorites. Among the featured cuts, Member’s Mark 88/12 ground beef fell to $5.97 a pound from $6.17.

Donald Trump said on Truth Social that Walmart would be lowering prices “by a lot” at his administration’s request to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday. He also said ground beef would fall by almost 15 percent. Walmart framed the cuts as part of a broad summer savings campaign.

Record-high beef prices have been tied to drought, higher cattle-feed costs and a shrinking U.S. herd, and economists say rebuilding domestic supply could take years. Trump has also used Walmart as a barometer before, telling the retailer in May 2025 to “eat” the cost of tariffs rather than pass them on to shoppers.
