X adds iPhone video editor with captions and green screen tools
X rolled out a new video editor and recorder for iOS with multilingual overlay captions, customizable caption styling and green-screen effects that can pull from a user’s camera roll or other X posts. Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, said the launch is part of a broader effort to make the platform a place where creators can publish work that is not merely repackaged from elsewhere.
Bier said the company wants to give creators a “functional” editor so some videos on X can “finally be original content that doesn’t exist on other platforms.” He also said many top-account posts still contain stolen material, sometimes five years after a clip first went viral. The feature set is aimed at giving creators a faster path from capture to post inside X itself, rather than pushing them toward outside apps that often make it easier to recycle the same material across platforms.
The product push arrives alongside a tougher stance on repost accounts that reupload other users’ videos to game X’s revenue-sharing system. X calls that dynamic a “copycat economy,” where reposters can profit from material they did not create. The company has also been trying to blunt engagement farming from bots, which can inflate views and help stolen clips spread farther. Bier said in April that X was identifying and suspending 208 bot accounts per minute.
X still lacks built-in tools that let creators report stolen work in the same way Meta and YouTube do, leaving original posters with fewer defenses when copied clips outrun the source.
X said more updates to the video editor are coming in the next few weeks.
